INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Concert Band

Concert Band is the curricular band which meets daily as a regularly scheduled class in the Spring semester. This ensemble performs at concerts and other musical functions. Concert Band is open to 9th to 12th grade students who have achieved a reasonable degree of proficiency on a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Emphasis will be placed on basic skills and theory, as well as developing an appreciation for canonical Wind Band repertoire.
Marching Band

Marching Band is one of the more popular activities at Oakdale High School. Students register for Marching Band in the fall semester of their class schedule.

Percussion students register for Instrumental Chamber Ensemble (Meets during Block 3)
Wind students register for Marching Band (Meets during Block 4).
Guard students register for Marching Band Front (Meets during Block 5).

The band performs at parades, football games, community events, and band competitions including the USBands State and National Championships. The band practices after school or in the evening, and performs on most Saturdays in the fall. Summer practices are held throughout the summer and include a required two-week Band Camp in preparation for early performances.
Band Camp is typically the last week of July and the first week of August. All students are required to attend summer rehearsals and Band Camp in order to march in the fall. A detailed schedule can be found on the home page prior to the start of the season, and the student fee structure is compiled by the Band Boosters and distributed at a membership meeting.
Color Guard

Color Guard (Marching Band Front) is a very important part of the Marching Band, and enhances the visual performance of the Marching Band proper. Color Guard is a powerful and moving art form that combines dance with the choreographed spinning of flags, rifles, and sabres. The Color Guard class meets during the fall semester in block 4, then becomes an extracurricular activity for the Spring semester through the Indoor Color Guard program. The fall Color Guard is required to attend all Marching Band practices, including a two-week band camp prior to the start of the school year, after school rehearsals, Varsity football games, and all scheduled Saturday rehearsals and competitions.
Jazz Band
Jazz Band will be a scheduled course that typically meets during 5th block in the spring semester. The ensemble consists of trumpet, saxophone, trombone, drum set, auxiliary percussion, guitar, bass, piano, and a vocalist. Jazz Band will focus on the development of knowledge and in jazz theory, ear training, and performance. Basic improvisation skills will be introduced and refined, and students will develop a deeper appreciation for the art of jazz. Repertoire will consist of standard and contemporary jazz charts in a variety of styles including blues, swing, Bossa Nova, Latin, etc.
Class Piano
The Class Piano course will be offered in the Spring Semester. It will go over the basics of playing the piano.
Guitar
The Guitar Course is designed for an introductory course in guitar playing. Some of the concepts that will be introduced is basic note/rhythm reading, chord strumming, and performance.
